Academic Events- Katherine began attending the University of West Virginia State when she was 15 years old. She majored in mathematics and finished with a bachelor's degree when she was 18 years old.
Accomplishments in Computer Science-Katherine has researched using geometry in space travel. She calculated the routes that the spaceship could take to orbit (circle) the Earth and settle on the Moon. Katherine's exact calculation would be used by NASA to place astronauts in Earth's orbit. She later contributed math from the Moon and back missions for astronauts. Without Katherine, NASA would not be able to accomplish this, opening the door for upcoming mathematicians and black women in computer science.
